If you are worried about your sweet best friend during new year days, you are not alone.

And, yes, there are several preventive measures you can take to help your dog cope with loud noises during festive events like New Year’s Eve. Here are 7 effective strategies:

1. Soundproofing Techniques:

- Create a Safe Space: Designate a quiet area in your home where your dog can retreat during fireworks or loud celebrations. Use heavy curtains, blankets, or pillows to muffle noise.

My dog Luca, for example, he loves to retreat on the floor of the bathroom, as there the windows are very small, he can't see them, the floor is heated, he has the bathroom rug, he goes into solitary isolation but appreciates if I sit next to him on the floor.

- Close Windows and Doors: Ensure all windows and doors are closed to limit outside noise. (Make sure the dog is indoors before midnight)

2. Calming Devices:

- White Noise Machines: These devices can help drown out disturbing sounds and create a soothing atmosphere for your dog.

- Sound Therapy: Play calming music or specific soundtracks designed for dogs, which can have a relaxing effect.

- Thundershirts: These are snug-fitting garments designed to provide gentle pressure on a dog’s body, which can help reduce anxiety. (Otherwise, a scarf or towel around the head/airs could help prevent intense noise shock)

3. Comfort Items:

- Favorite Toys and Blankets: Surround your dog with their favorite toys or blankets to provide comfort and a sense of security.

- Interactive Toys: Engaging toys can keep your dog occupied and distracted from outside noises.

4. Desensitization and Training:

- Sound Desensitization: Gradually expose your dog to recorded noises of fireworks at low volumes, paired with positive reinforcement (like treats), to help them build tolerance.

- Training Commands: Teaching your dog commands like “place” or “stay” can help them stay calm in designated areas during noisy events.

- Calming Treats or Supplements: Look for natural calming treats that contain ingredients like chamomile, valerian root, or L-theanine. Always consult your veterinarian before trying new products.

#6. Manage Your Dog’s Environment:

- Walks Before Events: Take your dog for a long walk before the festivities begin to help expend their energy, making them less anxious when the noise starts. (Make sure to walk with your dog on the line on the 31st and the 1st, as people may throw fireworks during both days actually, and dogs could get scared of them and run away.)

- Stay Calm: Your dog can pick up on your anxiety, so try to remain calm during celebrations. Reassure your pet with gentle affection, but avoid over-pampering, as it can reinforce anxious behavior.

7. Consult a Veterinarian:

- If your dog has severe anxiety, it may be helpful to consult your veterinarian. They can suggest prescription anti-anxiety medications if necessary.

By implementing these strategies, you can create a safer and more comfortable environment for your dog during festive celebrations, helping them cope with the noise and excitement.
